The 2008 Can Blau is a blend of Carinena, Syrah, and Garnacha from Montsant where value can still be found. Dark ruby-colored, it reveals a compelling bouquet of mineral, smoke, spice box, black cherry, and plum. Sweet and smooth-textured on the palate, this medium to full-bodied effort has excellent depth, concentration, and length. Drink it over the next 6 years.

Inky purple. Sexy aromas of blueberry and boysenberry compote are complemented by cinnamon and mace, along with a subtle smoky undertone. Gains weight and richness with air, picking up notes of mocha and candied flowers. I looked for tannins but failed to find them. Extremely attractive right now.

The 2008 Pruno, from the estate’s younger vines, is a blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot aged for 12 months in seasoned French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it offers up a sexy bouquet of Asian spices, incense, cedar, mineral, and assorted black fruits. Super-rich, bordering on opulent, it has layers of succulent, spicy fruit, enough structure to support 2-3 years of cellaring, and exceptional length. This sensational value over-delivers in a very big way. The estate of Villacreces adjoins Vega Sicilia.

Bright ruby. Fresh strawberry and raspberry aromas are deepened by notes of licorice, black tea and pungent herbs. Supple in texture, offering sweet red fruit flavors and showing no rough edges. A smoky note comes up with air, adding complexity to a nicely persistent, red berry-dominated finish. Extremely easy to drink, and offering excellent depth and clarity for the money.
