Thirsty Thursdays Beer Tastings at Gary's Wine & Marketplace

This “Thirsty Thursday” craft beer sampling features some brew close to home. Flying Fish Brewing Co. features some of the best craft beer in the country, and they’re brewed right here in New Jersey!

Thursday August 12th, between 5-7pm, stop in to any of our three locations to sample some of New Jersey’s finest brews:

Farmhouse Summer Ale - lightly filtered with an earthy, spicy hop character from imported hops and a beautiful rich creamy head from the wheat.

Belgian Abbey Dubbel - This classic-style Abbey beer features an immense head with a fruity nose and a generous body. Malty in the middle, the beer features a clean, almond dry finish and a slight alcohol warmth.

Hopfish IPA - uses three hop varieties at five different times and has been dry-hopped for two weeks with 22lbs of Nugget hops. This brew has a deep golden color, and plenty of hop bitterness balanced by malt sweetness.

Extra Pale Ale - Pacific Northwest hops create an extremely balanced beer with a beautiful straw color.

Saturday Wine Tasting: Spain on the Staff Brains at Gary's Wine & Marketplace

For the second time in as many years, Maggie Fox, our Wine of the Month Club director, used August as an excuse to showcase staff palates; wine associates were asked to share their favorites with club recipients and wouldn't you know it ... the majority of selections originated in bull-fighting country. I guess great minds think alike after all!

So tasty are these wines, we felt the need to share them with all of our local friends too. Forget the siesta and come sample three Spanish wines this Saturday at Gary's, all hand-picked and staff approved!

At our tasting bars this Saturday, August 14, from 12-4pm:

2007 Acanto Yecla: If there's a country on the cutting edge of the high-value/still-affordable ratio, it's Spain, particularly in budding wine regions like Yecla. The resulting vino is juicy and new-world in style, yet classic in its flavor profile. The nose is loaded with blackberry and black tea aromas, while layers of brambly berries, graphite and cassis fill the palate. No wimpy salad with this baby; bring on the beef!

2009 Pazo Senorans Albarino: Watch out Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio ... Albarino is rivaling the standard varietals for the top spot as the perfect accompaniment to heavy August heat. Fresh, pure and unusually light with revealing notes, suggestive of apricot and peach this delicious white will keep you Flamenco dancing long into the night!

2008 Jimenez Landi Sotorrondero: Ten years ago, the wines of Mentrida (a region just south of Madrid) were hardly worth a mention, and rarely earned one. But Jimenez Landi has come bursting on the scene with some glowing reviews and a 93 point Wine Advocate Score for this Syrah-Grenache blend that critic Josh Raynolds called a "hedonist's delight" and reminiscent of a top level Cote Rotie."

Saturday Wine Tasting: Turning the Trends at Gary's Wine & Marketplace NJ Wine Store

Many people don't think of wine as something that's affected by trends, but just look at the rollercoaster of falling in and out of favor that Merlot, Pouilly Fuisse, and Chablis have ridden, and you'll see that trends affect the wine world just as much as fashion. So this week, we take a look at a few wines that have been the victims of "trendsetting" and restore our faith (and hopefully yours) in a few tried-and-true favorites.

At our tasting bars this Saturday from 12-4pm:

2008 Charles Vienot Pouilly Fuisse: In last week's Wall Street Journal, the wine editors suggested that Pouilly Fuisse, a "70s favorite", is worth another shot. We're game, are you?

2008 Drouhin Chablis: Chablis (the real stuff from France, not the big bottles from Southern Cali) used to be known as one of the world's great wines, at least until everyone and their brother started using it as a catch-all term for light Chardonnay produced, well, anywhere! This one's the real deal from a household name in Burgundy.

2007 Angels Landing Merlot: We all know the line from Sideways, but there's more to life than Pinot Noir. Time to taste a Merlot that's as far from boring and uninspired, with a punch that just might bring you over to the dark side.

Thirsty Thursdays Beer Tasting at Gary's Wine and Marketplace

Today Thursday, August 5th, from 5-7pm, all three Gary's Wine & Marketplace locations will be sampling craft beers from two of the best "canned brew" makers in the country Oskar Blues (Boulder Colorado) and Butternuts Brewing Co (Upstate NY).

Stop in and sample these delicious microbrews:

Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale: America's first hand-canned craft beer delivers a hoppy nose and assertive-but-balanced flavors of pale malts and hops from start to finish.

Oskar Blues Gubna Imperial IPA: This beer, with its light amber color and slightly spicy malt character will greet you with a pungent citrus blast, provide a spicy yet round middle and finish with a brisk, clean bitterness. Yum!

Butternuts Porkslap Pale Ale: A brew flavored with crystal hop and a touch of fresh ginger to create a distinct flavor and a crisp mild finish.

Butternuts Snapperhead IPA: darker in color than most IPAs, but a fantastic taste that cools you down on a hot summer day!

RP 90pts "Chablis from the Southern Rhone" Under $20 Free Shipping on a Case | $1/Btl Shipping on a 6-Pack
Price: $19.99
Reg: $24.99
ON SALE!

Very rare bottling and our price is the lowest in the country
. This is a really special bottle of wine made with primarily Clairette which generally is used as a blending grape. After tasting this we can't believe there's not more Clairette being produced. Great aromatics, minerality, and beautiful white fruits. And Robert Parker called it the "Chablis from the Southern Rhone."

The Alary family have been growers in the Rhone valley for 11 generations. Their specialty has been the wines of their home village, Cairanne. The Alary vineyards are found on the choicest parcel of Cairanne, known as the Font D'Estevenas. Here, the latest in this long line of vignerons, Denis Alary, fashions the lineup that has earned him the citation by Robert Parker as "one of the stars of the Cotes du Rhone Village of Cairanne."

Robert Parker 90 Points -- The 2008 Font d'Estevanas blanc (a blend of 90% Clairette and 10% Roussanne) comes across like a Chablis from the Southern Rhone. Crisp minerality intermixed with flower, white currant, nectarine, and grapefruit notes are present in this medium-bodied, elegant, delicious white. This tank-fermented and aged 2008 should be consumed during its first year of life to take advantage of its tremendous aromatic character.
